Are you realising that you still haven’t found your ideal career? Maybe you’ve had a few jobs and you’re still not satisfied, or maybe you’re just leaving education and ready to get into the workforce. Whatever your situation may be, this guide can help you to figure out the ideal career for you. You might even be surprised to learn that your ideal career isn’t initially what you would think!
Know Your Values And What You Are Passionate About
You may not have defined your values yet, and that’s fine. You can do so easily, by simply thinking back to a few times in your life to the tune of the following:
- When you were the happiest? Most proud of yourself? Last time you felt satisfied? When you last had a great sense of wellbeing?
Thinking of times when you’ve felt the above should help you to figure out what your core values are, as well as what you’re passionate about. For example, if you found you were happiest when achieving a new PB in the gym, helping people achieve their own fitness goals with advice, and having a sense of well-being when you had established a solid workout routine, you might link this to your ideal career in personal training. Saying that, the clues might not be so black and white, so you may need to connect the dots a lot more carefully. Either way, it can be done!
Think of Your Ideal Lifestyle
Your job has a lot to do with your lifestyle. For example, teachers tend to get a lot of holiday per year in comparison to other jobs. That being said, a lot of their free time is spent grading papers. There are going to be some downsides and advantages in terms of lifestyle in each job, so you’re going to need to think this through carefully.
- How much time do you want off per year?
- How much flexibility would you like?
- What hours would you like to work?
- How much money would you like to make?
- Do you want advancement in your career?
Figure Out What You’re Willing To Put Up With
In every job, there are downsides. Even in a job that is absolutely perfect for you, you’re likely to find some downsides. It’s important to identify the downsides you’re willing to put up with. For example, performers often have to experience a lot of rejection before they book a job. However, you must decide if it worth it for you and this is a very personal choice.
Decide Whether You’re Able To Go Back Into Education
Some roles may require you getting another degree or qualification. Would you be willing to go back to George Washington University if it meant you could work in PR, for example? Decide what you’re willing to do to land this role.
Education can help to prepare you for many different life opportunities, have a browse of the courses available and you never know what you might find.
Speak To People In The Industry
Speaking to people in the industry can give you a good idea of what to expect and the sort of community you’ll be entering into. See if you can connect with people on Linkedin to start with or Twitter. Getting your foot in the door is often linked to not only being in the right place at the right-time but also who you know. It is always worth seeking support and advice from those already in the profession.
Take A Personality Test
Alternatively, Personality tests are a great way to become more self-aware and pinpoint your ideal job! It’s a way of getting to know yourself – which is the most important part of success!
