I have recently just landed my dream job in teaching and I am beyond excited to start in November. However, the road has not been smooth and over the past few years, I have explored many different career options before landing (happily) here.

Here are some tips to help you locate your dream job, just like me!

Tip 1 – what to consider when finding your perfect job:

  • What did you dislike about your previous job (if you had one) or career?
  • If you could change something about your current employment, what would it be?
  • In the past, what have you enjoyed studying or doing?
  • What are your hobbies or interests? What do you like to talk about with friends?
  • If all career options paid the same salary, what field would you choose to work in?
  • If you could try someone else’s job for a day (no matter what the requirements are), what would you pick?

Tip 2 – scouting out different career paths and options:

There are so many career options available with more joining the list daily. Over the years, I have considered everything from marketing to journalism to charity development to advertising and everything in between. It was only after gaining some voluntary work experience in many fields, including teaching that I found the right path for me. The best way to learn more about different careers is to volunteer or shadow those who already occupy your dream role. Alternatively, if you are interested in a career like Law then you’ll find tips for legal recruitment here or you could search for bloggers sharing advice related to whatever dream job you are interested in, e.g. fashion design, social media, medicine, charity work, travel, etc.

Another thing to consider is what kind of working pattern you are looking for, e.g. part-time, from home, night shifts, in your own time, etc as well as routes like being self-employed or not.

Tip 3 – consider the practicalities of entering a certain (potentially new) profession:

  • What is your skill set? How would you improve upon it or gain further knowledge in a certain field?
  • What is your previous experience and how could that be used in other careers?

It is important to consider your pre-existing skillset when looking at a dreams job because you might not have the exact qualifications required. However, your experience and other skills should not go unnoticed. Once you have narrowed down your dream job into a certain field or career path, then look into courses available for skilling up. These will help you to create a standout CV or job application form when you do come to apply for that perfect role. Similarly, studying online has many affordable and flexible options available to suit all sorts of individuals fancying a career change as well as helping with a work-life balance.

Tip 4 – be prepared to put the work in:

If you are heading for a career change or in a different path to your previous studies, then you need to be prepared to put the work in. Landing your dream job is not going to be easy, and no doubt you’ll need to put in the extra effort to achieve it. However, it will be worth it in the end. You should consider ways to make yourself the most desirable candidate to employers; by enhancing your skills and experience as much as you can. You might need to work for free to get going. However, once your foot is in the door, then you will be well on your way.

Tip 5 – be hopeful and optimistic:

Most importantly, remain hopeful and optimistic. You will get there eventually with determination and commitment. From me to you, always believe in yourself – you have got this!
