The Graduate Grind: What To Do When Uni Doesn’t Lead Straight To Your Dream Job

Written by Channon Gray

In my opinion, University is certainly worthwhile. Nonetheless, I must admit that they sometimes sell a dream that isn’t entirely accurate. The proposed journey of completing your studies before walking straight into the 50 grand a year job of your dreams is a little off the mark. Unless you get a first at Oxbridge, the reality is likely to be a little tougher.

Don’t panic, you’re still on the right journey. Still, with student debt and the pressure to get on the career ladder whirling around your head, you need to act fast. Here’s what you can do.

Compromise The Dream (Slightly)

You may have had your eyes set on walking into the perfect job straight after uni. Unfortunately, thousands of other graduates are in the same boat. So, you may need to compromise on your dream. At least temporarily.

Search the internet for apprenticeships near me to find out about opportunities. OK, so the pay won’t be as good while the long-term security is a little lacking too. Nonetheless, this is a great way to force your foot through the door while gaining some genuinely useful experiences. You’ll also grow in confidence by taking this route too.

Besides, the networking opportunities are second to none. We all know that it’s often who you know, rather than what you know, that counts. Even if the role is voluntary, it’s a short-term sacrifice that could potentially open the door to great things.

Look At Another Degree

Having your BA (Hons) is excellent. However, you should not ignore the fact that there are more people with qualifications up to this level than ever. So, it might not be a bad idea to take out another year or two to put yourself ahead of the crowd.

It’s not too late to find a Master’s Degree for the coming year. Meanwhile, if you don’t like the idea of going back to campus, distance learning is an option. Once you leave Uni with this form of higher education under your belt, finding a job will be a lot easier. Especially if you use this opportunity to gain experiences too.

Taking a Master’s is hard work and stressful. Nevertheless, it needn’t take over your life quite like your undergraduate degree. It’s certainly worth consideration.

Create Your Own Path

Life isn’t supposed to be easy. If nobody is willing to give you the platform needed to showcase your talents, you can always do it yourself. Some of the biggest companies in the world were started by students and newly graduated entrepreneurs. You could be the next.

There are many ways to start your little business, such as launching a blog or an online store. Meanwhile, depending on your skills, you can provide services without needing to invest heavily in equipment. For those needing to build a team, connecting with people in the same boat could work wonders. After all, they’ll have the same determination as you.

Get this right, and it may allow you to work the job you love while being in charge of your destiny. What more could any graduate ever want from their career?
