Dear Future Natalie: 16 & Growing Up

Written by Channon Gray

My Sister and I at her Prom!

Today is my little Sister Natty’s birthday, and it’s the big 16! Honestly, I cannot believe that my strong-willed, cheeky baby Sister is growing up so fast. But needless to say, I am so unbelievably proud of her despite her persistently irritating ‘banter’ all day, everyday…

I thought that I would write her an open letter for the next two years of her life, as she goes from a child to an adult, discovers what she loves doing and figures out this crazy fast-pace world that I, myself, am still navigating.

Dear Natty,

16 already? Dang it girl!

Turning 16 is momentous but no doubt comes with it’s inevitable difficulties. Whilst you are no longer truly a ‘child’ as you enter into your first year of independence at college, at the same time, adulthood is still a wee while away.

In the next year or two, you will discover everything that you absolutely love to do, and that which you loathe. You will make decisions that will shape your life, as well as ones you may hope to one day forget. It will be challenging, fun and daunting at times.

But, most importantly, no matter what, stay true to who you are. Be you, always. Love you, always. Showcase you, always. Believe in yourself every single day.  And please, never, ever, doubt your ability.

When you feel like you can’t and there is a rocky up-hill treacherous mountain in front of you, step back, breathe and try again. You absolutely can and you will. You’ve already trekked over many obstacles in the past few years, so why not take on and conquer more?

Although, I will say, whatever you choose to do in life, make sure that it is something that makes you happy, not just now but for forever and beyond. If you think it is a good decision, then stick by it and don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise.

Happy 16th Birthday Natalie!

Lots of love and hugs,

Your biggest Sister, Channon x

Just an ickle something to wish my Sister a sweet 16th birthday. If only, I could describe to you all how blessed she made me feel this week at her prom, we’d be here for weeks and weeks.
