Whenever you are looking for and applying to jobs, there are many things that you need to be aware of. One of the main ones is the resume, as without that being as good as possible you are probably going to struggle to get the job you really want. But the natural question that arises here is: what kinds of qualities do the best resumes have? In this article, we are going to take a look at some of the qualities you should ensure your resume has, to help advance your likelihood of getting the job you are going for.
In a sense, the presentation of the resume is the most important aspect. After all, if it doesn’t look quite right, it is perfectly possible that the employer is likely to throw it away without barely even reading it. So what do we mean by professional presentation? Your resume should have the appearance of being produced in a proper manner: typed or word processed, on good quality paper, and laid out in a manner which looks professional. Basically, it’s all about making it clear that real effort has gone into making it look good. If that is the case, you’re more likely to be found in the yes pile.
You need to make sure that the person reading your resume is going to be able to read it as clearly as possible. That essentially just means having a clear enough text on the page. It is necessary to print out your resume with each change to ensure that you can see how it looks on the page – unless it is a position where they have asked for an emailed copy only, of course. You need to think about spacing on the page, using the best resume fonts, and how to lay it out so it is clear as day.
Strong Introductory Paragraph
This is the most important part of the writing of your resume. You need to write a strong introductory paragraph which introduces you as an individual and shows why you are perfect for the job. You should really be tailoring this based on what jobs you are applying for, to make it as unique as possible to each application. Show in a few sentences why you have what they are looking for. Keep it direct and honest, and make sure that it is clear in short sentences.
Finally, be sure to do something that will make your resume stand out from the rest easily and clearly. You don’t want to go overboard here trying to be too zany or anything, but you should make sure that there is one clear reason why someone would want to choose your resume above the rest. As long as you have achieved this, you will be much more likely to get the job. Remember if you are struggling that there is plenty of help out there, including online and at your local job centre.
